Hero’s Pose (Virasana)

A Prenatal Yoga Pose for Hip Opening and Meditation

Watch how it’s done below!

At Prenatal Yoga Center, we focus on yoga practices that promote alignment, flexibility, and mindfulness for every pregnant student. Hero’s Pose (Virasana) is a seated pose that gently opens the hips, supports internal rotation, and provides a stable position for pranayama (breathwork) and meditation. This pose is ideal for finding calm while encouraging flexibility and alignment during pregnancy.

Benefits of Hero’s Pose

The Hero’s Pose offers several important benefits for pregnant people:

  • Hip Opening: Promotes gentle internal rotation of the thighs, releasing tension in the hips.
  • Grounded Meditation Position: Provides a comfortable and stable base for practicing mindfulness or breathing exercises.
  • Alignment Support: Encourages proper alignment through a neutral pelvis and a long spine.

Alignment Tips for Hero’s Pose

To practice Hero’s Pose safely and effectively during pregnancy, follow these alignment cues:

  1. Start on All Fours: Begin on your hands and knees to position your legs comfortably.
  2. Knees and Feet Placement: Bring your knees together (or slightly apart) and your feet out to the sides, with the soles of your feet facing upward.
  3. Use a Block or Blanket: Place a block or folded blanket under your sit bones for support. Adjust the height as needed to ensure comfort and reduce strain on your knees.
  4. Sit Back: Lower your hips onto the support, with your feet positioned outside your hips.
  5. Internal Rotation: Gently internally rotate your legs, allowing your sit bones to widen and creating more space in the hips.
  6. Maintain Spinal Alignment: Keep your spine long and avoid thrusting your ribs forward. Relax your shoulders and keep your neck aligned.

Modifications for Hero’s Pose

Hero’s Pose can be modified for comfort and safety for all expecting students:

  • Sit Higher: If the pose feels uncomfortable, add a second block or increase the height of your blanket to reduce strain on the knees and hips.
  • Knee Support: If you experience knee discomfort, consider skipping this pose or using extra cushioning for support.
  • Alternative Positions: Substitute with another seated pose like Easy Pose (Sukhasana) or Star Pose (Tarasana) if Hero’s Pose is not accessible.
