Finding the Support You Need in Birth

20 May Finding the Support You Need in Birth

In this episode of Yoga | Birth | Babies, I speak with Stephanie Heintzeler, midwife, doula, and IBCLC.  Stephanie’s vast experience as a birth worker ranges from delivering babies as a midwife in Germany to supporting women as a board certified lactation consultant.  Stephanie and I talk about getting the medical support you desire and key differences between the midwifery model of care and more traditional obstetrics.  She also explains how the role of a doula can enhance a birthing person’s experience and the scope of practice of a doula one can expect.

Here is what you’ll hear about!

  • Stephanie’s background and what brought her to this work.
  • The differences between a OB/GYN and midwife
  • Stephanie’s midwifery practice in Germany and the scope of practice of a midwife
  • The differences between midwifery in the US and Germany, including how midwives and traditional OB/GYNS work together
  • Stephanie’s experience as a birth worker in two different cultures and her perspective in their individual approach to birth
  • Doulas! – The doula’s scope of practice- what a pregnant person expect from their doula.
  • Red flags – areas a doula should not be imposing upon
  • How to utilize a doula if the pregnant person  does not have many care provider options or like the care provider they have
  • Lessons America women and care providers may consider from the birthing culture abroad
  • Final tips!

Stephanie Heintzeler is a German educated midwife and acupuncturist and US educated doula and Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). She is the founder of The New York Baby, a team of 20 doulas and baby specialists (aka baby nurses). Stephanie was born in NYC but grew up in German where she found her enthusiasm for midwifery already when she was 12 years old- thanks to her little brother being born then. Since then she has delivered over 2,000 babies and loves being part of this special phase in a woman’s life.

Stephanie is also one of the writers of the Health&Parenting pregnancy app and baby app.
