Hi Shayna,

There is much debate as to the safety of water births. Personally, I have attended two home water births with midwives and all went well.

The theory behind water births, is that it is more comfortable for the mother, decreasing her pain and also simulates the water environment the baby is in inside the womb. So the transition out of the mother's body is easier on the baby. Once born, the baby is still breathing through the umbilical cord until brought out of the water. The concern is that the baby will gasp for air before being removed from the water.

ACOG (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists )has not endorsed this technique of birthing. It says there is not enough data to prove safety. However, to my knowledge, they are not condemning it either.

I would recommend continuing to do more research and having a frank discussion with your care provider about your concerns. If you chose to have a water birth, you will most likely need to have a midwife and home birth. I believe currently, there are not any facilities that allow water birth in NYC.

Be well,

When I asked my doctor about a water birth, he said those facilities have been shut down over the past couple of years due to lawsuits from babies drowning. I live in Brooklyn, and he said the closet water birth facility that he knew of is in Staten Island. Wondering if this is true... (I'm 13 weeks pregnant - so I still have time to investigate!)

I'd like to know more about the gate control theory of pain since I want to avoid using the help of epidural. I also would like to learn more about breathing techniques that also serve as pain relievers. I am on the 26th week right now.

Thank you.
