Hi Linda

Thank you so much for your feedback and comment about the safety of cod liver oil during pregnancy.

The research that I found had conflicting advice about the level of vitamin A as the main concern of ingesting cod liver oil when pregnant. However , I did find a study from The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, stating "NIH - Moderate Doses of Vitamin A Do Not Pose Risk of Birth Defects

Contrary to what many researchers had feared, doses of vitamin A commonly taken during pregnancy do not increase the chances that a woman will have a child with a birth defect, according to a study conducted by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD).

Specifically, the study found that taking daily doses of between 8,000 and 10,000 International Units (I.U.) of vitamin A during pregnancy does not appear to cause birth defects. The study also showed that it is very rare for women to take more than 10,000 I.U. of the vitamin each day. Although this finding indicates that few women are taking doses that potentially could increase the risk of birth defects, the small number of women in this group limited the study's ability to determine if such high doses do indeed cause birth defects. "

I hear that you are more concerned about the mercury levels found in cod oil. I could not find too much information about that. All the research I did, pointed to the multiple benefits of cod liver oil during pregnancy. That said, if it a concern, I would advise not taking the oil or speaking with your care provider about it.

Again, thank you for your comment.

Take care

Cod Liver Oil is not advised during pregnancy due to possibility of mercury. Omega 3 Fish Oil from a very reputable source is advised but read up on taking an antioxidant if you choose to do so. I'm researching that now. Krill Oil has been talked about as well but I don't know if its particularly recommended for pregnant women.
