Hi I'm 39 weeks pregnant had my doc visit yetserday was told there is a lot of amniotic fluid around the baby when I questioned this they told me I don't have diabetes and all my scans showed that baby is healthy but when I go into labour the cord could come out before the baby so I would have to be monitored closely reading this article I'm a bit uneasy if these too much fluid in my womb baby is moving more freeley which means that he could get tangled in his cord I'm so sick of worrying now

My poor daughter 3 days ago went into labor, full term, and her son was born with the cord soo tightly around his neck that he had died, he was full term 7lbs 9 oz and 21 inches long. He was beautiful and perfect in everyway, and tests proved his cord cut off all blood supply to his brain, etc. The person who wrote that article is obviously very uneducated. 6 days prior to his birth/death, they did ultrasounds and EVERYTHING was perfect as it was througout her entire pregnancy.. He had petechia all over his face and crimsom lips from "lack of oxygen", when the cord is tight around the neck, the cord iself is choked noff causing loss of oxygen. therefor the no the baby doesn't breath through its mouth or nose, but it does through the cord.. Having this happen IS VERY REAL, and very devastating, and it should never happen, My heart goes out to my daughter and her hubby, and to everyone out there who has gone through such a nightmare.. It is unfair, cruel, and devastatingly heartbreaking.. Heaven has many little angels who have suffered from nuchal cord.. RIP little K.G.B.. we love you sweet little angel.

Wow, what an insane article.
You now that cerebal palsy can be caused by the cord wrapped around the neck. Yes a fetus is not breathing air in the womb, but the cord can easily damage.

This article is like saying;
"jumping 10 stories won't kill you, only in some cases"
LOL

Yes, the baby CAN be strangled by the umbilical cord. YOU may not think so and neither might that quack you are quoting, but if that were true why was my daughter born BLUE and with a LACK OF OXYGEN to her brain which caused PERMANENT BRAIN DAMAGE???

The reason is of course, obvious, but you just don't want to see it for whatever reason. When you have kids maybe you will understand. It is so frustrating to hear these outright lies.

And by the way you can stick your condolences up your butt. I would rather you stopped this way of thinking so other children are not harmed instead.

First until you lose a child and see with your own eyes do not try and tell people something else was going on. At 32 weeks I lost my son. The doctors did not know why until I delivered him. He had a true knot and his cord wrapped tightly around his neck 3 times. So tight when I pushed him out all 4 doctors gasped when they seen him and then the placenta came out immediately afterward because the cord was all on my baby he pulled everything out with him. Second I had a two vessel umbilical cord and a very active baby. Hiis growth was ahead a week. Also at 26 weeks they seen my amniotic fluid was high. And just like this article. When I asked what was going on or for more answers I got 'its fine, these things rarely lead to anything'. Well BS. I lost my son 3 days after asking for another ultrsound because my sons movements were changing. I was told he is fine. I live everyday wishinh I were a doctor or nurse to know what was important. After his death 2 obgyn's told me they were sorry but this area is not well studied or even taught. Devasting. Yes its rare but my son rare or not deserved a chance t live and have educated doctors that cared enouf about saving THIS baby. And not just being so comfortable to label him a iufd. And move on to the next baby. Not thinking what they could have learned from this for the next mother. And to the person that mentioned the stethescope. I had one and listened daily. At one point I was hearing my own and thought it was my sons heartbeat. At l&d emergency the nurse did the same thing hearing my heart beat instead of my sons. Until any of you with advise or judgment open your truely thoughtless mouths. Think first about the tens of thousands of women who have lost their child to the very thing you say can't happen or if it does its rare. Rare or not our babies were very real and loved and god given perfect without this accident. Get a heart and try to see and speak throug anothers point of view. Especially when you are posting this for public. Be more thoughtfull. Thank you

I really feel for all the people leaving messages about the loss of their children. Firstly because I cannot imagine losing my son; I have no idea how they have the strength to carry on. And secondly, because I believe some of them *may* have received the wrong information about the passing of their children.

The person who wrote the article is completely correct when they state a cord cannot prevent a baby from breathing in utero and during labour. At neither time is the baby using its lungs, trachea or nasal passage to breathe. Compression of the trachea is what choking and strangulation is, and suffocation is the prevention of oxygen to the brain. In utero and during labour, a baby is getting oxygen to its brain through numerous arteries . For a cord to be wrapped so tightly the blood is cut off from all of these tiny, tiny arteries is small. Very small. Possible but unlikely.

A cord is designed to be able to pulse and deliver oxygen to a baby through immense pressure. The number of babies reported to have died through cord related issues is grossly over numbered. Not all doctors and midwives know the true facts about umbilical cords. For example, to cut a baby's cord before it stops pulsing is to suffocate a baby, yet this is performed as standard in hospital. It's enough to send a baby into shock and for the baby to require resuscitation. Unless it is suspected the cord is too short to full deliver the baby, the baby should remain connected to the mother until the cord finishes pulsing. That way, there is very little risk for the baby to experience any lack of oxygen.

Unless a post motem has been carried out on the baby, placenta and cord, no doctor should EVER put the cause of death down as cord related. That's just absolutely ridiculous. You can't look at a baby who passed away and say that, just because the cord is around the neck and/or body, that's how it died. Absolutely outrageous and any parent who hasn't had the cause of their child's death properly confirmed, should never just go on a doctor's assumption.

Hello, I lost my baby girl in 1986 after a 12hr labour. She was my first baby. Her cord was wrapped around her neck more than six times! Dont tell me she didn't die from her cord wrapped around so much. She had gone very quiet in the womb days before, Im sure this contributed to her death!
The doctors did not shed a lot of light on cause of death, but fairly obvious really!

My son was just born with a very tight nuchal cord. It had to be cut before he could be delivered. His face was swollen and deep purple from the bruising and he had blood in his eyes from the intense pressure the cord had placed on his face. He spent 6 days in the NICU recovering and we were told by many NICU nurses how lucky we were that he hadn't suffered any facial paralysis or death because they had seen that happen with cases just like his.
We're 3 weeks post partum and his eyes are still badly bruised with blood pooled in his eyes.
I would challenge anyone to take one look at my little boy and tell me that nuchal cords aren't serious.

Babies can strangle. Mine strangled at 37 1/2 weeks the cord was around her neck 5 times and she had a true knot. Blood flow was stopped to her brain causing her death, Thats strangulation. The kicks and kicks and kicks before she died was indicitive of this. We couldn't get her out in time. It is important to teach mothers warnings signs and not sugar coat reality.

My daughter was born at 36 weeks with her cord around her neck 2 times, and it basically strangled her. So I dont understand why someone would say this is a myth. My daughters face was bruised when she was born and you could see the spot on her neck where the cord was so tight. Its sad to say that some people think that this can not happen, it actually upsets me that this "DR" thinks that this can not happen. If he would have seen my baby, then he would have known that she was actually strangled :(

my son was born with the cord around his neck. he is perfectly fine. it is RARE that babies die from this. my midwife talked to me about it after i gave birth. i thought it was something that was dangerous but when she told me it RARELY is, then i calmed down about it.
not to make any one mad or anything but the article states that it is RARE not IMPOSSIBLE. so pls be kind. they are just informing you.

one again please be kind.

I have not yet had the pleasure of having a child so I have never experienced these problems, nor do I know anyone who has. I am deeply sorry to those that have had losses from the cord wrapped around their unborn child.
However, I have to say that the people leaving comments about the article being irresponsible or wrong must not have paid very close attention. It says it is RARE, not impossible, for the cord to kill a fetus. Obviously, those people are part of the RARE statistic.
True, a fetus can not be killed by strangulation, but they can be killed by SUFFOCATION.
Suffocation: To kill or destroy by preventing access of air or oxygen.
Clearly this can happen if the CORD or NECK of the fetus is squeezed too tightly as it is cutting off the blood supply to the brain therefore preventing oxygen from reaching the brain.
Just to make it clear though, I am not any type of medical professional, I'm just not stupid.
Under the same subject, but a different topic, if you are in labor and something doesn't feel right, don't let the doctor talk you out of a C-section. Yes, there is a point where it's too late for a C-section but if you're not there yet, stand your ground. I have heard and read so many stories about parents asking for a C-section because something seems off but they let the doctor bully them out of it and their child died or had severe mental or physical disabilities because of it.
In fact, don't let a doctor do ANYTHING to you period without your permission and knowing what it is first. This is called battery and is very much illegal.

Just to make it clear though, I am not any type of medical professional, I’m just not stupid.

im sorry but i do not care what doctors say about babies not taking a breathe to be strangled. babies are strangled! when there is something squeezing around the neck and preventing oxygen and circulation to a very important body part, they are being strangled! Last week on sept 13th 2011, at 38 weeks, i went to the hospital for lack of fetal movement. thought for sure i was going to be told he was cramped inside my womb not moving as much, but he had no heartbeat. i had to deliver him. 408 am on the 14th i delivered my son. it was the hardest thing ever, found out he had the cord wrapped 5 times tightly around his neck and once around his body. he was a very active baby. he was strangled and killed by the cord no more or less. if the cord wasnt around his neck id have him right now. oh and its a load of crap that babies born sleeping are not conscidered humans because they never took a breathe! r.i.p. evan mommy and daddy love you.

Well..my friend just lost her baby girl at 37 weeks because the cord was tied in a knot...so..it is a big deal and maybe a c section isn't such a bad choice if it could possibly save your baby
